Panel discussion part of the 'Invisible but Omnipresent solo exhibition at Deptford Lounge.
Panelist include Liz May APT Gallery manager, Sue Lawes Local artist and activist, James Price Filmmaker of 'Reading Pepys' documentary, Dr Alex Rhys-Taylor Dep. Director of Centre for Urban and Community Research Goldsmiths, Anita Strasser Local photographer and PHD student on regeneration / gentrification in Deptford.
The focus of the ‘Invisible but omnipresent’ project, has been cultural heritage; its preservation, communication and relevance to the existing local community. Taking as a rudiment the cultural history of Deptford and the issues around the preservation of it, due to the redevelopment in the area, the panel discussion’s focus was on the relations between the local community and the heritage of Deptford, their importance and the role of the art in these relations. Furthermore, the discussion expanded to how art, artist and art institution shape the area’s regeneration and looked at current debates that connect the arts to gentrification, such as the resent Boyle Heights protests in Los Angeles, Sharon Zukin’s and Neil Smith’s position in their writings amongst others and how these debates are relevant to the art scene of Deptford.

Family workshop part of the 'Invisible but Omnipresent solo exhibition at Deptford Lounge.
The workshops I run focus on teaching children how to reuse items from our daily life either by recycling them or find different alternative ways to use them; a simple rubber band can become a stamp, a used milk carton box became a jack-in-the-box toy and a paper plate was turned into a mask.
My aim is to stimulate children’s creativity by offering them alternative ways to view their environment and teach them basic craft skills to create toys and games from their surroundings. In addition is a way to introduce them the idea of recycling/reuse rather than disposing old or used items and reduce waste and stimulate their inventiveness.

Artist's discussion part of How to write:reading groups by Five years Gallery.
Exploring the nature and identity of a book, part of an experimental project by Collaborative Art is the ‘Tracing my Echo’ book, an alternative exhibition space within a publication. The reading material for this proposal is suggested to be the book itself. The book will be introduced to the group and offered for ‘reading’, towards a discussion about the book’s functionality and alternative spatial identity.
Referencing the ‘Xerox Book‘ 1968 by Seth Siegelaub and John Wendler , and other projects such as ‘Zingmagazine: a curatorial crossing’ by D. Dikeou, ‘The Mule’ etc, that explore the relationship between a publication, curatorial intervention and the understanding of presentational platforms; and reflecting the views of Jonathan Meades in his book ‘Museum without walls’, on artwork reproduction and representation and its dynamic, the group will be offered a platform to discuss, debate and react to the presentation of the book as an exhibitional space.
The referencing material along with the publication and a brief presentation of the project will be included in the 2 hour event and will aim raise questions of the readabily of a space and an exhibition when presented in alternative set-ups and if the space such as a ‘book’ defines the interaction with its content due to its established functionality, if any.
