painting and beyond publication

painting and beyond publication

Painting as an art form, has evolved and been challenged in many instances throughout its discourse of institutional and theoretical constitution, inheriting a multitude of propositions regarding the nature and position of painting within the art world.

Observing the historical trajectory of painting raises the question of why specifically painting and not any other art-form has been explored and questioned in such depths. Could this scrutinising behaviour reflect the agonising proposition of questioning art as a whole and its reason of existence, through its more prominent art form? Has contemporary art reached the pinnacle moment, of parting from the notion of medium specificity to a rather unlabeled art practices adhering to the abstract concept of art?

Aiming to raise the above questions and expand to the relations art has developed through the means of global exchange beyond the west, this project aims to explore the factors that affect artistic expression in UK and Taiwan such as art trends, the socio-political context, education and cultural references and the impact they have on contemporary painting both in subject matter and technique.

Whilst exploring the possibilities of what can be perceived as painting today and reflecting the trajectory of painting in the western world, ‘Painting and Beyond…’ exhibition present a selection of seven artists, based in UK and East Asia, with different attitudes towards the notion of painting and their approach to its manifestation, including work created with classical brush/paint techniques but debate the traditional principals of the painting through their subject matter, to works which cross-reference different art forms and question the notion of representation and materiality of a painting and its spatial perception.

I was invited by National Normal University of Taipei to deliver an artists’ exchange exhibition along with a series of lectures and a publication. For this project I collaborated with Chih-Fen Tsai Head Professor of Fine Art the university and worked with artists from UK and Taiwan such as Karin Ruggaber, Head of the Sculpture department at Slade University and 2012 solo artist at Tate Modern and Huang Lanya solo artist at Kuando Fine Art Museum and Fine Art Museum Taipei amongst others.

The Exchange is a project aiming to create a platform for local, national and international artists to showcase work in bound form. In the form of an independent artist library and a bookstore, the Exchange is located within a independent coffee shop in Dalston and it consists of work from over 80 international artists both established and emerging.

As well as housing works from early career artists our collection features work from artists whose publications may also be found in TATE Galleries London, Whitechapel gallery, V & A and MOMA New York.

The collection of independently published works, which will be featured as part of the library and also will be available for sale, with all proceeds going directly to the artists and whilst artists are not charged any fees to display/sell through The Exchange. In addition the participating artists have the opportunity to host an event, relevant to their publication, in the space.

The project is accommodating submissions from around the world such as USA, Japan, China, Mali, Benin, Togo and from countries across Europe and include published works from a breadth of artist and collectives - everything from underground comic books to Turner Prize nominees and winners.

The Exchange @ Brunswick East is an artist led project in an artist led space, currently self-funded and is kindly supported by local art collectives Gillett Square Studios and Collaborative Art.
